By the end of 2025, 90% of construction companies will require formal qualifications for all supervisory roles. Gone are the days when experience alone was enough. In the construction industry now, a certified Site Supervisor will stand out.

With stricter Health and Safety standards, it is more important now than ever to clue up on regulations, this is something you will learn through an NVQ relevant to your role. Alongside this, insurance and liability on site now often require proof of qualification, and an NVQ is a perfect example of met competency, this also gets you in the good books with main contractors as they are demanding competency evidence.

Whilst it gives you an extra boost on site, CITB and CSCS card schemes now require NVQ’s for gold cards. So, it is a pretty big deal!

NVQ’s ‘on the job’ nature means you do not have to worry about taking paid time off or even worse, missing out on pay for training. National Vocational qualification can be carried out on site.

Let’s give an example of an NVQ for site supervisors. NVQ Level 3 Diploma in Occupational Work Supervision is one of the popular ones we see here at Hercules. This NVQ focuses on allocating work and checking performance as well as maintaining health and safety on site. This leads to eligibility for the Gold CSCS Supervisor Card.

But how do employers benefit from NVQ’s? Well, the Safety Schemes in Procurement (SSIP) and Construction Design and Management (CDM) Regulations 2015 both demand demonstrable competence from workers and supervisors on site. NVQ’s provide clear and recognized evidence for the employers to meet this requirement. Hiring or upskilling supervisors with NVQ’s reduces the compliance burden on employers and help maintain pre-approval status with SSIP member schemes like CHAS, SMAS or Constructionline.

NVQ’s also reduce accidents and costly mistakes. Supervisors with NVQ’s are trained to identity and mitigate risks and enforce safety procedures. This monitoring of team behaviours will prevent on site action which could result in HSE action, material waste due to poor planning and even rework due to unclear instructions and miscommunication.

Here at Hercules Academy, we do not just hand over paperwork and leave you to it. All learners are matched with a dedicated NVQ assessor who acts as a mentor, coaching you from start to finish. This may look like regular check ins, real time feedback on your evidence submissions, help with setting your goals and even encouragement to keep you moving forward.
